Penang Nutmeg

Nutmeg (also known as pala in Malay) is one of the two spices – the other
being mace – derived from several species of tree in the genus Myristica. The
most important commercial species is Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree
indigenous to the Penang Island.
This is the only tropical fruit that is the source of two different spices.
Several other commercial products are also produced from the trees, including
essential oils, extracted oleoresins, and nutmeg juice, etc.
The essential oil obtained by steam distillation of ground nutmeg is used widely
in the perfumery and pharmaceutical industries.
Nutmeg Oil / Oinment
Nutmeg Oil is distillated from the nutmeg seeds. Nutmeg Ointment is used as a
traditional remedy to soothe muscle aches and pains, relieves neuralgia and
rheumatic pains.
Nutmeg Juice
Recently, Penang people use it for nutmeg juice drink, nutmeg drink is now
starting to be popular. There are two types of juice drink, one they called
white nutmeg juice drink, just the juice from the fresh nutmeg fruit, it is a
wholesome drink with the strong aroma of the fruit.
Pickled Nutmeg
Penang is famous for its pickled nutmeg. The pickles are normally sold by weight
of 100g (minus the preserving liquid). The price differs depending on the type
of fruits and also location.
