Ferry to Penang

Starting from January 1, 2021, the old ferries are temporarily being replaced
by fast, passenger-only boats.
These boats offer a quick journey of less than 10 minutes to reach Swettenham
Pier in Georgetown. They operate between 7:00 am and 8:30 pm.
Departures are available every 30 minutes during peak hours and approximately
every 60 minutes during off-peak hours.
The ticket prices for passengers remain the same as before, as listed below:
Pedestrian:
- Adult fare: RM1.20
- Children (between 5-12 years old): RM0.60
During this period, one of the old ferries will still be in operation
exclusively for transporting motorcycles, trishaws, and bicycles.
Passengers are only required to pay for the ferry to Penang Island. There is no
charge for the return journey back to Butterworth.
Ferry Terminal Information
Ferry from Butterworth Side:
The Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal in Butterworth is located
adjacent to the Butterworth train station and bus station. It is part of the
Penang Sentral Transport Hub, which
opened at the end of 2018.
If you arrive by train, proceed to the left after exiting the station's main
entrance and follow the signs. You will reach the ferry terminal via the new
Penang Sentral building. It takes around five minutes to walk to the jetty.
The bus terminal is now situated under Penang Sentral.
Ferry from Penang Island Side:
Ferries depart from the Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal in George Town,
specifically at Weld Quay, commonly known as the Penang Jetty (Jeti Pulau Pinang).
From here, you can catch a bus to any destination on the island, as the Rapid
Penang Jetty Bus Terminal is on both the right and left sides upon exiting the
ferry area.
If you require assistance in choosing the appropriate bus, feel free to inquire
at the bus terminal information office.
Additionally, you can board the "Free Cat" Penang bus from this location. This
free bus service takes you around the old part of Georgetown, passing by several
George Town Hotels, and eventually reaches the KOMTAR Bus Terminal.
The free Penang bus now departs from Terminal B, located on the left-hand side
as you descend from the ferry. Buses leave approximately every 15 minutes.
If you wish to travel by bus from the Penang ferry jetty to Batu Ferringhi
beach, you can take bus 101 from Terminal B. Buses depart approximately every 10
minutes, providing the most cost-effective way to reach Penang's beaches.
