GAMA Department Store

Located in the heart of George Town, Penang, GAMA is a renowned department
store occupying a prime location at Magazine Circus. This bustling junction is
where Dato Kramat Road intersects with Jalan Gurdwara (Brick Kiln Road),
Macalister Road, Penang Road, and Magazine Road. Known officially as GAMA
Supermarket & Departmental Store, this retail establishment encompasses four
floors of commercial space and a basement car park. It is surrounded by Dato
Kramat Road, Jalan Gurdwara, Jalan Trang, and Tongkah Road.
GAMA first opened its doors on 8 December 1980, and it is housed in the iconic
building called Wisma GAMA. Upon completion, it held the distinction of being
the largest standalone department store in Penang. GAMA is recognized as the
pioneering supermarket-cum-department-store concept in Penang. Its roots trace
back to the establishment of Pulau Pinang Supermarket, which commenced
operations in 1967 within the Chowrasta Market building. The visionary behind
GAMA is Chang Cheng Guan, a Chinese businessman born in Kedah, who drew
inspiration from his visit to Singapore in 1964 and the thriving retail scene
exemplified by stores like C.K. Tang.
On 22 May 2022, GAMA was entered into the Malaysia Book of Records for being the
oldest supermarket and departmental store in Malaysia.
