Penang Times Square

Penang Times Square stands out as a remarkable shopping destination in the
northern region, representing a vast urban redevelopment project in the heart of
George Town, Penang. This sprawling development occupies the site previously
held by Eastern Smelting Company, also known as Dato Keramat Smelting and Estoy
Smelting Company. Its boundaries encompass Dato Kramat Road, Kampung Jawa Lama,
Kampung Jawa Baru, and Jalan Timah.
Developed by Ivory Properties Group, Penang Times Square is designed to include
both commercial and residential components, organized into four distinct phases.
The initial phase, known as Birch the Plaza, aims to become a prominent landmark
along Dato Kramat Road. Birch the Plaza will feature a combination of commercial
and residential units. The retail podium of Birch the Plaza comprises three
storeys of shoplots, while plans were once considered to include a monorail
station, although the status of the monorail project remains uncertain.
Phase 2, named Birch Regency, is currently in the final stages of planning and
will encompass both commercial and residential units. Phases 3 and 4 are still
in the conceptual stage and await further development.
Nestled within the Penang Times Square complex is Birch House, the former office
of Eastern Smelting, which now serves as the headquarters of Ivory Properties.
It's worth noting that the name "Birch" used in this property development does
not refer to J.W.W. Birch, the first Resident of Perak who was tragically
assassinated, but instead pays homage to the esteemed E.W. Birch, the Resident
of Perak from 1905 to 1909. Birch played a vital role in the development of
Kinta Valley and Penang during his tenure.
